David Gauntlett is a British sociologist and media theorist. His earlier work concerned contemporary media audiences, and has moved towards a focus on the everyday making and sharing of digital media and social media, and the role of such media in self-identity and self-expression. He therefore considers the role of cross-media convergence very important.

When discussing websites, Gaunlett's thesis on internet is an extremely important factor to the success of a website. It is very important to avoid what Gaunlett refers to as a 'Walled garden'. A Walled garden is a website in which links to other sites are non-existent, it only offers internal links. This is extremely important to avoid; as, in successful websites, links to social media play a massive role in the success.
I have therefore used this information to avoid a 'Walled garden' in my own website.
