Narrative of my music video:

Inspired by the movie ‘Candy (2006)

The poster of Candy

This film is about a young couple who have a toxic relationship as they are both addicted to drugs. She is an artist and there is a scene where she paints them both; which gave me the idea to base my narrative on that.

I was also inspired for the aesthetic, style and shots of my video based on Lana del Rey’s ‘National Anthem’ song, The neighbourhood’s ‘Daddy Issues’, Tame Impala’s ‘Love/Paranoia’ and the movie ‘Call me by your name.’

My idea is to film a girl painting a picture whilst she has clips of memories playing from someone she was with; who for some reason she’s not with anymore. She feels paranoid, confused, hurt and heartbroken; as heard in the lyrics. She is using art as a way to exteriorise it, trying to ignore all the good moments and how much she loves him because he has let her down. This is clear by 'Are you sure it was nothing, Cause it made me feel like dying inside'. At the end I am planning on her burning a note from him and perhaps also the picture she has painted (which is of her portrayal of them together). Then I will show her leaving everything behind. I have deliberately shown that the blanket she is using to sit on while painting is also shown in the memory with him, and the fact that she leaves that behind too shows how she has let him go. I have had this idea based on the lyrics of my chosen song:

Love/Paranoia by Tame Impala

I may not be as honest as I ought to be now

When the walls go up, I said it didn't worry me

But it hit me and I cannot hold it in

I can just be paranoid, don't quell the desire to love

What was really going on, does it really fucking matter?

Baby is all you can ask me, ok, fair play here we go

I've heard those words before

Are you sure it was nothing

Cause it made me feel like dying inside

And I was insecure, but it's pure

Didn't notice until I was in love for real

And my feels gonna cross the line

Just to find what your type is

If only I could reach your mind

Oh I'd be fine, I'd be normal

Now's my time, gonna do it

And suddenly I'm the phony one

The only one with a problem

True love it bringing it out of me

The worst of me, and I know now

Do you remember the time we were

The time we were by the ocean

I didn't care if it was day or night

We were right where I wanted

Girl I'm sorry, babe I'm really really sorry

From this song I get the feeling that the girl of this relationship has failed him in some way and now he has realised how he has to move on as she hurts him. I want to portray this in the way that the guy is the toxic one and the girl (who is the artist) is the one who is done with him. Nearly all the shots will be focused on a part of his body- to induce the idea that he is a faint memory that she is trying to forget. The fact that the viewer won’t be able to see many shots of his whole face also gives the idea that we identify more with the girl and understand her. This is because not seeing him much prevents that the audience feel any kind of connection to him or sympathy.
