Wall of Glass by Liam Gallagher
Liam Gallagher is is an English singer and songwriter
How have setting and lighting been used to create certain ambience?
The first long shot:

It shows a dark hallway, in which the lights turn on and off to the rhythm of the music. This makes it feel pleasing to watch as it matches to what we listen to, and the fact that the lighting is dark and the lights are white makes them stand out more. The fact that the setting is an empty hotel at night where there is barely any light and the way that colours (by the use of neons) and light is applied makes the scenes look a lot more interesting and unusual. Lighting plays a big role in this music video as it is the essence of it. The majority of scenes are edited by the different use of light. For example in the light is blinking quickly, blinking to the music beat or even just the staying the same but in green, red, blue or purple.
What camera angle and movement has been used in the opening scenes in this music video?

At the start, the camera starts turning around as well as getting close to the door while the lights are blinking. This makes the beginning look intriguing and special as it is a different approach to camera angles and movement. A lot of the shots throughout turn around Gallagher while he is singing; changing the angle which we watch him in and so not making it boring. The whole editing with both the camera shots and lighting make the video very attractive as it is a new and bizarre approach to filming; attracting more audience. The use of glass and reflections is also shown throughout, which helps shape meaning in the media text. The fact that shattered glass is focused on when he says the verse ‘One day you’ll shatter like a wall of glass’ helps connote the idea that is being transmitted from the music.
Making reference to the use of symbolic codes, what genre of music does this music video best fit?

The genre is ‘Britpop’. This genre is a UK based music and culture movement in the mid 1990s which emphasised "Britishness", and produced brighter, catchier alternative rock, partly in reaction to the popularity of the darker lyrical themes of the US-led grunge music, an alternative rock genre, and to the UK's own shoegazing music scene. The main colours used in this genre are blue, white and read. It is also recognised by the associated imagery of British and working class and being similar to music from the 60’s and 70’s. It is also associated with fashion consciousness (Gallagher is wearing all black and a leather jacket and retro sunglasses).

In what way has the title been connected to the narrative contained in the video?
The title ‘Wall of Glass’ connects to the video in the way that in nearly the whole text, when a lyric is sang, the shots focus on a literal representation of it. For example when Gallagher sings ‘One day you’ll shatter like a wall of glass’ and a glass is shown shattering. The connections are shown by simbolism and lip sync of the artist. This therefore follows the Music Video convention.
